On this day in 1945, around 50 people met in a schoolhouse on the outskirts of Pyongyang, from a variety of backgrounds. Among them were former guerilla fighters, politicians, intellectuals, but all of them had the goal of seeing recently-liberated Korea reunited now that Japanese imperialism had been defeated.
Many questions were discussed at this meeting, but two of the most historically significant were whether or not to aid Korean Communists and reunification activists who were being persecuted by the Rhee dictatorship in south Korea, and whether to provide material support to the Red Army in China. Many of those there were reluctant to get involved in these struggles, fearing their resources were to small and thinly spread. Some said it would be better to simply build their own society and ignore these outside problems.
However, General Kim Il Sung, 33 and Vice President of the Korean Communist Party at the time argued that both were necessary if there was to be any hope of success. If they turned their backs on their allies and comrades in the south, they would have no one to rely on in the future.
In the same way, just as the Chinese Red Army had helped them fight the Japanese, they ought to stand by their Chinese friends in their struggle. And so he and his wife operated a hotel in the border city of Namyang in order to smuggle weapons to Chinese Red Army Officers who 'vacationed' there. Of course as we know, China later repaid this favor by supporting the DPRK against fascist aggression from the south.
Likewise he invited Communists, reunification activists, and other persecuted minority groups to come to Pyongyang in hopes of building a unified, socialist Korea. And so the Korean Workers Party was established.
While it has not yet accomplished its goal of Korean reunification, it has done tremendously well against the most extreme sanctions and imperialism any nation has ever had to endure. And so I cannot help but respect the KWP and the work it has done for the betterment of Korean people and mankind as a whole.
Long live the Korean Workers Party! Choseon Rodong Dang Manse!
And never forget you are always stronger standing with your friends than standing alone! Always be willing to help others in need, because you never know when you may need them to return the favor. The historic friendship between China and the DPRK is testament to that. Long may these two socialist countries endure, for the betterment of all mankind! And may we find lasting peace and self-determination for all nations where none ever again suffer from hunger, homelessness, or disease - as was the dream of these 50 or so men and women 75 years ago.
