My favorite soprano and all around diva of the 20th century after Maria Callas.
She grew up in Barcelona and had limited voice training because of the difficulties of the time but oh, did she catch up later. Now gone from the earth, she was kind, helped other musicians and never had criticism, either her singing, her roles or anything. One simply could not critique such perfection. Usually the comments were .. She brought the House Down! Montserrat caused pandemonium! She rocked the world!
Her name is Montserrat Caballé.
She sang with everyone of note, and she performed everywhere of note and she sang every aria of note in the world. And still, she remained friendly, with that brilliant voice always ready to sing and always helpful to other musicians. One favorite piece - she describes she is going to sing just a little song,'ein kleines Lied'. And she sang Puccini's Oh Mio Babbino Caro and in her performance, it is not ein kleines Lied but a towering performance
Here is a pleasant overview of this greater than life diva that makes for a perfect Saturday Night at the Movies.
In later years she experimented somewhat and sang Barcelona with Freddie Mercury for the Barcelona Olympics, I do love the lightsaber conducting and what makes this more outstanding is that the two of them had fun! They loved what they were doing and what is more charming and joyful than musicians having fun!
Crossing over into modern music she also sang with Vangelis
With sopranos you always find that one aria where they simply cannot keep the voice fully rounded - some piece of music that does not work exactly right and there is a crack. With Montserrat, you never get that. She remains perfect.
